This great video tutorial shows you how to create perfect photographs for photo essays for your scrapbooks.
It’s from Tasra Dawson of Real Women Scrap TV. Tasra talks to CharMaine Beleele, a professional photographer, writer, teacher and scrapbooker who teaches this technique in her original class called Snap n Scrap! at her local Michaels store.

So a photo essay is a technique we are familiar with that photo journalists use all the time. We may even have mini versions in our scrapbook pages already.
A photo essay is not the one-photo scrapbook page where the journaling tells the story. A photo essay is a collection of photographs, but a collection of photographs is not necessarily a photo essay. For them to become a photo essay you capture the story in your photos; they can then stand alone, or you can add captions or even a whole essay.
To create perfect photographs, in summary, CharMaine’s points are:
- Establish shot – take in the whole park
- Shoot the Sign posts – it sets the scene
- Get the Characters – who’s involved in this story?
- Get the dramatic moments, the story – what’s happening? Tell it with action shots
Old/New concept: Don’t go for the completed action … capture the anticipated action instead. This technique takes advantage of the Zeigarnik effect – "the human psyche is captivated by the almost complete actions, for example, almost touching, almost kissing, almost falling, and so on. So … the moment of art is found in the ‘almost touch’".
Improve the drama and perspective of your shots by being aware of the ‘depth’ of your photograph: creating a foreground, mid-ground, background; bringing the subject forward, away from the mid-range surface.
So with the photo essay concept and these great tips you will no longer have lovely layouts with elegant embellishments and pathetic photos. Instead you will create perfect photographs that add zing to your scrapbook pages.
