Ode to National Scrapbooking Day

Snowdrops 6in at 50pc

Would you believe it? National Scrapbooking Day is just around the corner - again!

Yes, it's hard to believe another year has gone so quickly. But the snowdrops have been and gone, too, daffodils are blooming everywhere and buds are thickening on the magnolia and azalea bushes, so it must be spring again.

And along with Spring comes hope and a lightening of the spirit after the dark, cold and barrenness of winter.

.

Spring fever must have hit or inspiration struck - whichever - with the creation of a poem to encourage you to take part this year. I never write poetry, and after you've read it you might well agree!! lol.

A few notes to help with reading the poem: for the rhythm to work, 'national' has two syllables as in 'nash-nal', and 'family' sometimes has two ('fam-ly') and at other times has three ('fam-i-ly').

With a little help this becomes The National Scrapbooking Day Rap! To get the right rhythm you should set up a steady 4-beat foot tap. Bruce Lansky suggests counting 'and a ONE and a TWO and a THREE and a FOUR', and come in when you're ready …

The first Saturday of May
is National Scrapbooking Day
So it's time to make your plans
for what you'll do with your hands.

Tell your friends you will show
a scrapbook tale's no tale of woe
But one of great celebration
telling stories from relations.

There's romance and there is fable,
come and do what you are able
As you tell your family's story
all for love and not for glory.

In an album, for good measure,
you will see each family treasure,
Or create a fitting tribute
to loved ones gone before.

Take the time to tell your nation
family stories give foundation
and confid ence to kids' pursuits
establishing much needed roots.

Your children's children will be glad
that with paper, glue and brad
Your creation shows connection:
likeness, habits and expression.

And all down the generations
There'll be much appreciation
For the legacy you gave them
on National Scrapbooking Day.

The initial ideas for the poem came surprisingly fast but then it changed and I ended up a bit frustrated, so I've left it. If you've any suggestions to improve it, want to add more verses, or indeed you are inspired with a poem of your own, please use the comments below. And of course, don't forget to tell us what you're planning for National Scrapbooking Day.
