Finished in a Flash - product SchoolAre you looking for fast ideas for scrapbooking school photos now that school’s back? Don’t let them sit in the packet forever. The initial back-to-school rush is over now. Get them into the album this time!

Isabella was taking photos on the first day of the new school year before she knew about scrapbooking. Not every time, mark you, but certainly when her children started school or changed school and occasionally between times. “It was a lot easier when they were young,” she said. “Trying to go into school when they were teenagers was another matter!” she laughed. “So there are no classroom photos later.”

“My photos are not very exciting,” she added, “but they remind me of what the children looked like and what the school uniforms were like at each stage.”

“School uniforms may not be a familiar concept to some of your readers, but they saved a fortune in clothes as you don’t need a different look for each day,” she smiles. “They also saved squabbles every morning about what to wear. My children had four years at a school that didn’t have uniforms and I noticed the difference.”

You’ve got uninteresting photos, have you?

Does it matter? What you want is a record for yourself, not for a photo competition. You want to see how your child has grown, how the styles, fashions and hair change from year to year – and child to child. When you look back, or your children or grandchildren look at the photos in twenty, thirty, forty years time, that’s what will be noticed, remembered and probably laughed at. They’ll all be great photographs then.

.

So what to do with this year’s start-of-school photos?

Finished in a Flash - SchoolI got a Finished in a Flash School Kit from Hot Off The Press recently and had a play with some scrapbooking pages. The papers are fun, bright and extremely flexible. You’ll not be putting them on the shelf until next year because you can use them for birthdays and lots more if you don’t need them all for school pages. Each comes in a two-page spread if that’s how you want to use them and everyone will think you’ve done a lot of work before adding your photos, but that’s all just part of the pattern. There is no pink paper, so if you only have boys it won’t be wasted!

Each Finished in a Flash pack contains:
12 coordinating 12″x12″ patterned papers
51 cardstock punch-outs
20 standard brads
12 shaped brads (6 apples, 6 stars)
30 mini round brads
3 ribbons (36″ of each)
2 themed Brad Buddies (a pencil and a ‘school’)

As I said, you can use the papers for many themes. What makes them into school-themed layouts are the die cut punch-outs and the Brad Buddies.

.

PunchoutsThe punch-outs come away easily – just use an emery board to remove the little nibs that hold them in the book. It’s much easier to reach tight corners with an emery board rather than with sandpaper. They are a good weight and have a coated surface giving a slightly glossy look. If you want to write on them use a permanent marker or stamp with an inkpad like StazOn. The die cuts are not sticky but can be attached with foam tape if you wish.

.

Brad Buddies - SchoolThe brads and the Brad Buddies are so cute you’ll want to use them all. There are apples for the teacher, a ‘school’ word Buddy and a bright pencil held in place by a black brad that forms the pencil lead!

Those who have no time to scrap will love the fact everything coordinates.

Each book also contains several sample layouts. If you’ve run out of ideas, want fast ideas or just want to follow the instructions, they’re there for you. Another successful page completed and into the album!

“I’m a terrible mom,” Jenny said. “I’m new to scrapbooking and couldn’t find the first-day-at-school photo of my youngest child … I have the older children – life was less hectic then. We had moved by the time the youngest started school. I remember being too embarrassed to photograph him getting onto the school bus. I desperately wanted to, but no one else had a camera, so I shied away from it.”

How sad. Do you see the advantage you younger mums have? Scrapbooking is so popular today folks think nothing of seeing you out with your camera! Never be afraid to photograph your children. They are precious and so are the memories.

We’re always looking for new and fast ideas for scrapbooking school photos and all the rest, too. Add a link to your new school layout in the comments or email it to us and we’ll feature it on ScrapbookingGems. It’s exciting to see your work.
