We love to use chipboard shapes and accents on our scrapbook pages and to decorate album covers. They come in different weights, and I recently used some heavy chipboard to make a CD holder as a gift – so they’re useful in other crafts too.
Chipboard has been around for a long time. Traditional uses include mounting and framing of photographs, book making, backing for notepads, business forms and [tag]scrapbook[/tag] paper pads. You’ll sometimes find it as packing material protecting paper in transit. Colors vary according to the recycled paper the manufacturer uses. And in the time honored way, another office basic moves across to the scrapbooking market!
Did you know you can buy [tag]chipboard[/tag] by the sheet in the framing section of many craft stores?
Some sources of chipboard are not archival so check carefully if you intend to use it on or near precious photos. It’s important for the preservation of photos to ensure any materials used near your photos are acid-free and lignin-free. If you are concerned cover the chipboard with a coat of decoupage medium like Paper Mod Podge to act as a buffer and help prevent acid migrating from the chipboard to your paper and photos.
So what can a scrapbooker do with chipboard?
Many craft stores will allow you to use their die cutting machines to cut shapes from the chipboard you have collected from home. Sometimes they will charge a small fee when you do it. However check before you go to make sure the store you intend visiting offers this service, as I found to my cost after a long trip recently!
If you prefer to buy ready cut chipboard many will match [tag]scrapbooking[/tag] products you’ve bought. You can find words, letters, shapes, embellishments, charms, flowers, mini books, and spiral bound albums at many stores.
With some chipboard alphabets you can use the shape and the negative to give two quite different effects. You can also paint it, distress it with sand paper or an emery board, use rub-ons, or cover it with patterned paper.
So you can see it’s a versatile addition to your scrapbook stash. Check out the amazing new products at Joann.com! And have fun with chipboard!
