christmas ribbon It’s so frustrating when the ribbon runs out in the middle of a scrapbooking project. If you’ve ever been there then these 10 tips may come to your rescue next time.

We’ll look at two senarios:

1. You want to run a length of ribbon across your scrap booking page but when you get your ribbon box out you discover you don’t have the color you need. What can you do?

2. You’ve got the right color, but only odd bits of different lengths – can we do anything with them?

Here are our 10 tips …

Tip 1: use paper to substitute – trim it to the width required and ink the edges or distress them with an emery board.

Tip 2: join two pieces of ribbon together and hide the join behind a journaling block.

Tip 3: if the strips are too short to run under the journaling block fasten them on either side of it with a brad as in this example. You can make the journaling block whatever size you need to meet your ribbon – well, within reason.

Tip 4: if your ribbons are too short to even reach the journaling block then use a flower and brad or other small embellishment to bridge the gap. If you are careful it will look natural.

Four different sized lengths can be used. Be careful to make best use of the available lengths so as not to leave yourself with even more ends than you start with!

Intersecting short strips of narrow ribbon in this way would make an interesting corner detail for a photo – minus the Christmas stocking, of course (LOL).

Tip 6: place a small embellishment at the intersection of the ribbons to hide the join or the gap.

Tip 7: use word fragments or other small embellishments and link them with ribbon instead of running the ribbon all along the length. You could use small photograph if you wish.

Tip 8: make your design to one side of the 12 x 12 card and fit the ribbon to the size of the pattern, instead of the whole page.

Tip 9: use different ribbons for an alternate look. You could make a rainbow effect or coordinate the colors with the embellishments mentioned above or with your photos.

Tip 10: if all else fails change your design and don’t use ribbon! LOL!!

So when the ribbon runs out in the middle or your next scrapbook layout it need be neither a frustration nor a disaster because you can choose which of our 10 handy tips will work best for you.

All great tips! Another thing I try is to use the ribbon scraps to put diagonally on the four tips of the page, even if they are different ribbons. Good for using extremely small pieces.
